What Should My Child Wear to Their First Football Session?

Booking your child's first football session is exciting.
But once you've booked, another question often pops into your head...
"What do they actually need to wear?"
Do they need football boots?
Should they have shin pads?
Is a football kit necessary?
The good news is that getting ready for a first session is much simpler than many parents think.
Here's everything you need to know.
Comfortable Clothing Comes First
The most important thing your child can wear is something they're comfortable moving in.
For most first sessions, simple sports clothing is perfect, such as:
- A t-shirt or sports top
- Shorts or tracksuit bottoms
- A lightweight jumper if it's cooler
- Clothes they don't mind getting a little dirty!
At this stage, comfort is far more important than looking like a professional footballer.
Children play better when they can move freely and feel comfortable.
Do They Need Football Boots?
Not always.
For many young children—especially toddlers and beginners—a good pair of trainers is absolutely fine.
Football boots usually become more useful as children:
- Play more regularly
- Train on grass pitches
- Become more confident with movement
If you're unsure, don't rush out and buy expensive boots before your child's first session.
Many parents wait until they know their child enjoys football before investing in extra equipment.
What About Shin Pads?
For older children playing matches or regular training, shin pads are often recommended or required.
However, for younger children attending their first football session, they aren't always essential.
If you're ever unsure, simply ask the coach before your first visit.
They'll be happy to let you know what's appropriate for your child's age group.
Should They Bring Their Own Football?
Usually, no.
Most football coaching sessions provide all the equipment needed.
That includes footballs, cones, goals and training equipment.
If your child already has a favourite football, they might enjoy bringing it along, but it's rarely necessary.
Don't Forget a Water Bottle
One thing every child should bring is a drink.
Football is active, and even younger children quickly work up a thirst.
A water bottle is usually all they need.
Keeping hydrated helps children stay focused and enjoy the session from start to finish.
Dress for the Weather
British weather loves surprises.
If your child's session is outdoors, it's worth checking the forecast before leaving home.
On colder days, consider:
- Layers that can be removed easily
- Gloves if it's particularly chilly
- A waterproof coat for before and after the session
In warmer weather:
- Lightweight clothing
- Sun cream
- Plenty of water
The goal is simply to help your child stay comfortable.
What If My Child Is Nervous?
This is actually much more common than forgetting football boots.
Many children feel excited and nervous at the same time.
One of the easiest ways to help is by keeping everything relaxed.
Avoid putting pressure on the session.
Instead, remind them they're simply going to have fun and try something new.

A Smile Is More Important Than New Kit
It's easy to think your child needs all the latest football gear.
The reality is very different.
Coaches don't remember who had the newest boots.
They remember children who:
- Tried their best
- Had fun
- Encouraged others
- Kept smiling
Confidence and enthusiasm will always matter more than expensive equipment.
What Happens During the First Session?
If this is your child's first experience of organised football, it's completely normal to wonder what the session will look like.
Rather than jumping straight into matches, beginner sessions usually include fun games, movement activities and simple football skills designed to help children feel comfortable.

You're Probably More Nervous Than They Are!
Many parents tell us afterwards that they worried far more than their child did.
Children are incredibly adaptable.
Once they're kicking a ball, laughing with other children and joining in games, they usually forget all about being nervous.
The hardest part is often walking through the door.
Ready for Their First Session?
Your child doesn't need expensive boots.
They don't need a full football kit.
And they certainly don't need to be the best player on the pitch.
They simply need comfortable clothes, a water bottle, and a willingness to have a go.
That's more than enough.
At Future 11, we create a welcoming environment where every child can enjoy football at their own pace, whether they're two years old and trying it for the very first time or already dreaming of playing every weekend.
