Football is one of the most popular sports for children, which offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits.

As a parent, you naturally might ask yourself when is the best time for your child to start playing. You might be looking for an activity for your 2-year old and wonder if it’s too soon or maybe for a 10-year old and worry whether it’s too late.

Thanks to over 10 years of experience in football coaching for children, at Future 11 we have seen thousands of kids of different age groups and of any ability who are willing to learn and have fun.

If you're considering football classes for your child or toddler, we’re here to help you understand the ideal starting age and what to expect as your child begins their football journey.

What Age Do Kids Like Football?

It really depends as children develop an interest in football at different ages. Some toddlers are drawn to kicking a ball as soon as they can walk, while others develop an interest after watching older siblings, parents or even professional footballers on TV or YouTube.

Generally, children start showing an interest in football between the ages of 2 and 4, often influenced by their surroundings, exposure to the sport, or simply by joining in with their little mates.

When Can My Child Start Football?

At Future 11 welcome toddlers as young as 2 years of age in our football classes

We think that starting as early as possible is a great choice for your child to introduce them to basic ball skills, coordination exercises. All of course by allowing plenty of fun activities to keep their attention and keep them engaged.

What is most important for us is that your kids get a feel of the sport that feels fun and engaging rather than putting pressure on monitoring improvements week after week.

When joining is therefore quite relative. What matters the most, is having an inclusive and well structured football academy that can help them to explore their abilities at their own pace and improve whilst falling in love with the sport.

What Are the Benefits of Starting Football Early?

Getting kids involved in football from a young age has so many great benefits and it’s not just about learning to kick a ball, it helps them grow in so many ways!

1. Physical Development

  • Helps kids develop better balance and coordination.
  • Improves their agility and quick reflexes, making them more active and aware of their bodies.
  • Strengthens their muscles and overall fitness, keeping them healthy and full of energy.

2. Cognitive Growth

  • Teaches them how to think fast and make decisions on the spot.
  • Helps improve focus and concentration, which is great for school too!
  • Encourages problem-solving and strategic thinking, as they learn how to play as a team.

3. Social and Emotional Skills

  • Helps children learn teamwork, communication, and how to support their friends.
  • Teaches patience, discipline, and how to handle both winning and losing with a good attitude.
  • Improves their confidence and self-esteem, giving them a sense of achievement with every new skill they master.

How to Choose the Right Football Club for Your Child?

Finding the right football classes near you is important to ensuring your child has the best experience. Consider the following when choosing the right provider:

  1. Age-appropriate coaching

Make sure the club has programs tailored to different age groups, from toddler football to older children. Mixing older children with toddlers will result in chaos and won’t bring the best out of them and will spoil the fun.

  1. Qualified coaches

Look for clubs with experienced and certified coaches who understand child development.

  1. Fun and engaging sessions

The focus at a young age should be on enjoyment and skill-building rather than competition.

  1. Safe and inclusive environment

The club should promote a positive atmosphere where all children feel welcome and encouraged.

Our classes at Future 11 tick all of the above boxes and we currently have a free first session. Enquire today to let your kid have a taste of the fun they can have!

What Should I Expect in a Football Class for Toddlers?

If you’re enrolling your 2 or 3-year-old in toddler football, expect:

  • Short, engaging sessions (usually 30-45 minutes)
  • Fun drills focusing on motor skills and ball control
  • Parent participation in some of the activities
  • A non-competitive, supportive environment

For children aged 4-6, football classes will introduce more structured drills, including passing, dribbling, and basic game play while still maintaining a fun and engaging approach.

Can My Child Join Football Even If They Haven’t Played Before?

Absolutely! Many football clubs like us at Future 11 welcome beginners, regardless of prior experience.

The key is to find a supportive environment that nurtures your child's enthusiasm and helps them build confidence at their own pace.

How Often Should Kids Train in Football?

For toddlers and young children, one or two sessions per week is ideal to introduce them to the sport without overwhelming them.

As children grow and develop a stronger passion for football, they may increase their training frequency depending on their commitment level and goals and whether they will want to join a football club in the future.

What Equipment Does My Child Need to Start Football?

To get started, your child will simply need comfortable sportswear and football boots suitable for indoor and outdoor venues (no studs) and of course, lots of excitement!

Most football coaching clubs provide equipment during training like footballs, goals and training cones, so you don’t need to worry about that.

How do I Get My Child Excited for Football?

One of the best ways to nurture your child's interest in football is to make it a fun and engaging part of their daily life.

Playing with them in your home garden, at the park, on the beach or any other safe environment can turn football into a bonding experience, helping them feel more confident and excited about the game.

Watching matches together and discussing the plays can also help their understanding of the rules. Young children see parents as role models and if they see you getting passionate about your team will influence them.

It’s also important to encourage them without putting pressure on their performance and to let them explore the sport at their own pace and enjoy the process.

Every small achievement, whether it's learning to dribble or scoring their first goal, should be a moment of joy and celebration which will help your little one to build their confidence and enthusiasm for the game.
